History records Yue Fei’s tattoo — not his mother
Everyone knows the scene: Yue Fei’s mother tattooing four characters on his back. The official History of Song never mentions her. It says only that under interrogation Yue Fei tore open his robe to show 盡忠報國, ‘utmost loyalty to the country’, cut deep into the skin — not the later 精忠, and with no word on who did it. Ming fiction had him do it himself, or his officer Zhang Xian; only early-Qing plays and the novel Shuo Yue made it his mother. Some historians, like Wang Zengyu, doubt even the Song History passage. Which version do you carry?
The Song History line is real text, but its reliability is debated; the mother’s needle comes from later fiction.
