Loyalty Through a Thousand Autumns — Yue Fei and the Man Jiang Hong, 1140 CE.
The two fiercest lines are rhetorical convention in Song martial verse — the language of hatred pushed to its limit, not a literal intention.
Yue Fei (1103–1142) was the Southern Song dynasty's most celebrated general in the wars against the Jin. He fought more than a hundred engagements and lost almost none. In 1140 his army pushed north to Zhuxian Town, forty-five li from the lost capital at Kaifeng — the closest the Southern Song ever came to reclaiming the north.
Then the tablets came. Twelve of them, in a single day, ordering him home. He obeyed, was imprisoned, and was executed on a charge of three characters: mo xu you — "it need not have existed." He was thirty-nine. Twenty years later the verdict was overturned. Eight centuries later the poem is still recited.
This short film stages Man Jiang Hong as Yue Fei's last war-song — not a declaration of victory, but a man who already knows he has run out of time, finishing what he had to say.
