The Song of Gaixia
My strength plucked up mountains; my spirit overshadowed the world.
But the times turned against me, and my steed will run no more.
When my steed runs no more, what then can I do?
And Yu, my Yu — what will become of you?

The Night the Empire Ended

Recorded in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, the Song of Gaixia is the only poem Xiang Yu ever left behind — sung in his tent on the night the Han armies closed in, with songs of his homeland Chu rising from every direction. The next day he died at the Wu River, thirty-one years old. His opening line remains, two millennia later, the definitive Chinese cry of a hero at the end of his road.
