The horses that bowed with a wine cup
A Tang silver flask in the Shaanxi History Museum shows a horse kneeling with a wine cup in its mouth. It records something real: according to the Tang miscellany Minghuang Zalu, Emperor Xuanzong kept dancing horses that performed in brocade at his birthday and ended by bowing with a cup. After the An Lushan rebellion they ended up with the rebel general Tian Chengsi. When music played at a camp feast the horses began to dance; soldiers took them for demons, and they were whipped to death. The flask, found at Hejiacun in 1970, may not leave China.
The flask, its find-spot and its export ban are certain; the dancing-horse story comes from a Tang miscellany, Minghuang Zalu.
