但很多版本留下了同样的遗憾：白娘子总在受苦，许仙总在犹豫，法海总在作恶。《白蛇記》想换一种讲法——用爱情武侠的笔法。她是一位侠女，不是一个受害者；许仙会害怕，但他自己走进了金山寺去讲理；法海不是坏人，他守的是他的道。

The Legend of the White Snake may be the best-known love story in China — the umbrella on the Broken Bridge, the Dragon Boat Festival, the flood at Jinshan Temple, the pagoda. Over centuries of retelling, Bai Suzhen slowly turned from a demon into a woman.
Yet many versions leave the same frustrations behind: she suffers, he wavers, the monk is a villain. The Chronicle of the White Snake tells it as a wuxia romance instead. She is a heroine, not a victim. Xu Xian is afraid, and walks into the temple anyway. Fahai is no villain; he keeps his faith.
The story is the same. The people are not.
第一回 · 断桥借伞 春雨落在西湖上，他把伞借给了她，自己淋着雨走了。The Broken Bridge: in the spring rain on West Lake, he lends her his umbrella and walks off soaked.
第二回 · 端午现形 一杯雄黄酒，她没能藏住自己。The Dragon Boat Festival: one cup of realgar wine, and she can no longer hide what she is.
第三回 · 昆仑盗草 为了救他，她独上昆仑，向仙鹤与灵鹿要一株仙草。Mount Kunlun: to bring him back, she climbs alone to steal the herb of life from its guardians.
第四回 · 金山索夫 他自己走进金山寺，去和法海讲理；她来要人。Jinshan Temple: he goes to reason with the monk himself — and she comes to take him back.
上集止于金山寺前的对峙——风雨已起，洪水未来。Part One ends at the temple gates. The storm has risen; the flood has not yet come.
「法海不嗔」的「嗔」，是佛家所说的三毒之一——贪、嗔、痴。旧故事里的法海满怀嗔恨；这一版的法海，偏偏是一位放下了嗔的高僧。他与白素贞之间，没有恨，只有两种都不肯退让的坚持：她不悔，他不嗔。
嗔 is one of Buddhism's three poisons — greed, wrath and delusion. The old Fahai is driven by wrath; ours has set it down. Between him and Bai Suzhen there is no hatred, only two convictions that will not yield: she will not repent, and he will not rage.
