Melaka’s Ming princess — missing from Ming records
Every Malaysian schoolchild knows Hang Li Po: the Ming princess sent to marry Sultan Mansur Shah of Melaka, arriving with five hundred attendants who settled on Bukit Cina. The story comes from the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu) and is often told as the beginning of the Baba-Nyonya community. Yet no Ming record mentions her, and the 16th-century Portuguese Suma Oriental speaks only of an unnamed Chinese woman married to an earlier sultan. Historians mostly treat her as legend — a story that remembers real contact. How was she told to you?
The account in the Malay Annals is real; the princess herself is absent from Ming records, so most historians treat her as legend.
